topic Home Office in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

My wife and I both hold corporate jobs, but worked 100% remote from our home offices (1 Home, 2 separate rooms) all throughout 2021. Are we able to deduct our 2 home office spaces as well as any office items from our taxes? Will we have to pay any capital improvements/gains on this later if we sell the home?

No you are not allowed a deduction per the 2017 Taxcut and Jobs Act. And if you were allowed a deduction, you would have to pay capital gains tax.

The tax break is generally only for those who are self-employed, gig workers or independent contractors, not those who are employed by a company that gives them a W-2 come tax season.

“Employees who receive a paycheck or a W-2 exclusively from an employer are not eligible for the deduction, even if they are currently working from home,”

There may be some confusion, as the home-office deduction was previously allowed for employees. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, however, banned such workers from taking the deduction from 2018 to 2025.
