I live in California and have a rental house in Arkansas. My tenant moved out at the end of 2020. Due to historically cold weather plus illness and Covid. I wasn't able to get the place rented. So no income. But I had ongoing expenses in 2021. I continued the internet connection so I would be able to access the security cameras. Plus I left the utilities on for maintenance. Electric, gas, water. There is also mortgage interest, insurance and property taxes. Also some maintenance expenses that were performed by my son.

All in all I have just under $7,500.00 in expenses for 2021.

Even though I had no income can I still deduct those expenses on my sch. E?

As long as your rental home was available for rent then yes you can deduct the legitimate expenses you had for maintaining it.
