When you have a SSN mismatch or someone has used your child's SSN --even by mistake--- you will not be able to e-file. You will need to print, sign and mail your tax return this year.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

My e file was rejected stating that a ss# i filed for my kids wasn't allowed on multiple forms or was filed on another return, but it didn't specify which ss#. All the ss# are correct and I have an agreement with my ex husband that we alternate years on one of my children. He said he didn't claim him this year as it's not his year.
