Would a dependent receive money from Letter 6475

I am 21 and independent, but during the time of stimulus payments I was dependent and living with my parents. Would I, or they, have received money from the IRS from a stimulus payment in Letter 6475

To clarify: Would my parents have to pay back the stimulus if I file as independent and say I did NOT recieve stimulus payment?

If you were claimed as a dependent on a 2020 return then you should NOT have gotten any of the advance third stimulus payment paid to you directly ( whoever claimed you on the 2020 return go the advance based on how many people were listed on their 2020 tax return) so you will also NOT get a 6475 letter saying you got an advance you were not entitled to or was never sent directly to you.

On the 2021 return, if you are not going to be claimed as a dependent, when asked how much you got in advance simply enter zero and if you now qualify for some or all of the credit it will show up on line 30 of the form 1040.

If I understand correctly you were a dependent in tax year 2020 so your parents got a stimulus payment for you in 2021, documented by that letter. That is as it should be. Now that you are not a dependent you can file a return and get that stimulus payment again with your tax return. Your parents don’t have to pay back the stimulus payment. Seems like double dipping but that is the way the law reads.

Yes, your parents would have received the stimulus if you were dependent on their return. The letter No 6475 will include the amount of stimulus paid for the dependent.

This is a legal "double dipping" loophole in the 2020 & 2021 tax years that has been left wide open since it is only for the 2 tax years.

Letter 6475 is only reporting the payments the IRS sent out. It would include the 1,400 they got for you. You don't have to report it because they got it. You won't get a letter.

If you were a dependent on a 2020 return but filing independent for 2021 you can get it now and they don't have to pay it back. So say NO you did not get one because you didn't one, your parents got it.

The 3rd Stimulus payment is really based on 2021. The IRS just sent the checks out using 2020 to get them out fast.

Yes, Right. You can get your own Recovery Rebate Credit (for the Stimulus) on your own return. You say you got zero.

Parents got letter 6475 but it only showed $2,800 issued to them but my father swears he got $5,600 for me and my brother filed as dependants last year. What am I to make of this?

If your parents filed jointly, there should have been one Letter 6475 to each parent. Each letter reports half the total amount received. If your family received $5,600 total, $2,800 would have been reported on one letter to your father, and the other $2,800 would have been reported on a letter to your other parent.

If your family did not receive a second Letter 6475, both parents can check what they received if they make an account with the IRS.

The third economic impact payment paid $1,400 for each eligible individual, including dependents of any age.
