Go online and log into your account. Review your consolidated brokerage report. Your account number and document numbers are shown at the top.

Yes, I have done that. The problem is with TurboTax software. Vanguard is not listed among other brokerage web sites, like Fidelity, etc. So, I am not able to enter the Vanguard Document ID number.

Wait, if you can’t find Vanguard in the list of financial institutions, how do you know Vanguard is asking for a document number? Vanguard is listed on my version of TurboTax. They’re listed alphabetically.

I'm having the same issue. Vanguard is listed as a company you can import directly from, in previous years this was by entering your Vanguard login and password into Turbotax, and it would automatically fetch your forms. Vanguard apparently is switching to a document ID system (where like Robinhood you enter your document ID but nothing else). But, there is no obvious way to do this for Vanguard in Turbotax.

Outside of TurboTax, open your web browser. Log into your Vanguard account. Download your consolidated statement (1099). At the top of the first page of your statement is your "Document ID." That's the number you plug into TurboTax.

Yes I'm aware, but where in TurboTax do we plug that number in? Doing a document import for Robinhood takes you to a document ID screen, for Vanguard it takes you to a login/password screen, which doesn't seem to work the way it has in previous years.

When you import, select Vanguard Brokerage, then it asks for Document ID and account number.

Vanguard was late in publishing their 1099s, so electronic importing may not be available yet.

The user experience is not good with each firm doing their own thing.

What worked for me (finally) to get the Vanguard document ID import working correctly was to go to Vanguard Brokerage (even if you are importing a Vanguard Mutual funds account). This screen lets you enter the document ID and imports it accordingly.

It could be a couple of possibilities. One is that the password was entered incorrectly, you will need to grant third-party access for Turbo Tax to import. Also, it could be that there are too many individual transactions to import as the limit is 1500.

Hello, could anyone guide me step by step through how I can find my document ID for my 1099-R form to plug into turbotax? I withdrew money from a retirement fund through my employer last year, and I have the account number and a physical copy of the 1099-R, but I can't find the document ID to use for turbotax. I read that I can find it by viewing my "consolidated brokerage report" via Vanguard's website, but I've tried to navigate the site for about an hour and cannot for the life of me find said report. Someone help please, I just want to file my taxes.

You can manually enter the 1099-R form since you already have a hard copy, instead of downloading the information.

Here are the instruction to follow to add the 1099-R into TurboTax Online:

Open your return
Search for 1099-R in the upper right corner and select the Jump to link in the search results
Answer Yes on the Did you get a 1099-R? screen (If you land on the Review your 1099-R info screen instead Add Another 1099-R
Answer questions until you get to the import screen
Ti type it in yourself, select Change how I enter my form, and continue through

You should see two options to import Vanguard documents. 1) Vanguard Mutual Fund and 2) Vanguard Brokerage. Make sure you select the correct import selection. If you received a Consolidated 1099 Form (several different 1099 Forms combined in a single document), you should select the Vanguard Brokerage import option. With this option, you will need to provide your Account Number and Document ID. Both of these items are clearly marked in the top right corner of the page next to the year. If you received a stand alone 1099 Form or do not see the Account Number and Document ID, use the Mutual Fund import option. With this option, you will use your user id and password (same as you would log into Vanguard account).

I have opened my 1099 div. and there is no Document id number anywhere on the form. So not sure how to proceed if that number is required

Go back and select the Vanguard Mutual Fund import option. For this option, you'll need your Vanguard login credentials.

At the top of my 1099-DIV I see my Acct# and Document ID xxxx xx xxxx but when I enter them in the Vanguard brokerage area I get

Response from Vanguard - Invalid signon

I am putting in the Document ID as 11 charaters without spaces

If I go to Vanguard Mutual Fund and put in my username and password I get

No 1099 tax forms are available for this account. If you continue to experience problems, please contact Vanguard at [phone number removed].
