i just did my fed and state returns, and when it asked if I wanted my one "free state" - I said yes, but in the end I was charged $ 20.00?????? (for the supposed free state)

please explain

The software to PREPARE the state was free. There is (and has been for years) a fee to e-file the state return. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state.

The state software for tax year 2021 is free to download when using the Deluxe desktop editions or higher as it is included in the purchase price.

There is not a free state e-file unless the state return being e-filed is for New York state. The current e-file charge for the state tax return e-filed using the desktop editions is $20. This charge can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax return.
