If your federal return was able to file and you are getting this message for your Virginia state return, we would like to take a deeper look at this to clarify. It would help to have a diagnostic file, which is a sanitized copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed but has all of the forms and numbers entered. You can send one to us by following the directions below and posting the token number here so we can access the sanitized return.

TurboTax Online:

Sign in to your online account.
Click on Tax Tools on the left tool bar
Select Tools
In the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent”
Click OK on the message that a diagnostic file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

Open your return.
Click the Online tab in top menu bar
Select “Send Tax File to Agent”
Click Send on the message and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number.

Form 8582 is actually a federal form for Passive Activity Loss Limitations. TurboTax is attaching to your Missouri return, presumably because you have passive losses.

The federal 8582 is not yet available in TurboTax (estimate date is 3/17/2022) - follow the schedule release date at Federal Forms Availability.

Some states in TurboTax have reported issues with a 8582 being attached to the state return (and blocking the e-file) even when the form was not required. Can you tell me if the form is required on your MO return? If not, there may be something we can do about it.

tried to send my tax file back per the instructions but it did not send. Also tried to send it back to the email address from which the instructions came. That did not work. To whom should i send the file?

Since TurboTax customer service just kept putting me off (try again tomorrow) I thought I would try something. I deleted everything that gave an input to form 8582 and then proceeded through the tax review step. Turbo tax stated your taxes are done and ready to file. Then I went back and re-entered the information I had just deleted. Proceeded through TurboTax again and it let me file my taxes!
