Hello,

on my 2021 return it says that I overpaid my SS tax by one penny and won’t let me free-file without turbo-tax deluxe. I went back to box 4 on my w-2 and adjusted the rounding so it wouldn’t be an overpayment. But, it still says overpaid even when I changed the rounding. I did the math and everything. Help!

Well you do have excess Social Security tax and get a refund for it. And actually the first one should only be $263.25 unless you typed box 3 wrong. 4245.95 x .062 = 263.25. So you have 2 different situations here.

Are you married? Is one for your spouse?

You get excess SS back if one person had more than 1 employer and those employers took out more than the max of $8,853.60 (for 2021). If one employer took out more than the max you have to get it back from the employer.

you have both situations.
1. One employer took out too much.

2. The total of box 4 is over the max.

I did type it wrong… it’s $4345. I did the math and it’s only over by one cent. I adjusted it on the w2 and it still says I overpaid. I feel like I’m missing something. And this is just 2 w-2’s for myself. My wife doesn’t work.

These are separate employers and I did type it wrong… it’s $4345.

269.00+8835= 9104

Omg. I’m such dunce!!! If it’s anything over 8835 and I paid way more than that because I switched jobs mid year. it’s too much (duh). Ok… yeah I got it now. Sorry for wasting your evening :(

You're not missing anything. $9104 is over the max of 8853.60 so you get the excess back as a credit on your return. You have to upgrade to Deluxe because you need Schedule 3 for it.
