However, the instagram reward payment was paid to my paypal account, i then transferred to my bank, which paypal also issued me a 1099-k for the exact samereward payment issued from instagram. Now i have two 1099 from two companies but for the same thing. How can i file it ?

Only enter form 1099-MISC on your tax return.

Do not enter form 1099-K if this is for the same money reported on the 1099-MISC. Just keep t in your tax records.

If you receive form 1099-MISC for Instagram rewards, then you are not considered as self-employed and do not need to file a Schedule C.

In TurboTax, enter your form 1099-MISC and follow the interview until you arrive at the page titled Did this involve an intent to earn money?. Answer that this did not involve an intent to earn money. The amount will be reported as Miscellaneous income and will not be subject to Self-employment tax.

In TurboTax, there is a work-around. Although you may receive this income every year, say that you only receive the 1099-MISC only in 2021, not in previous years and not in 2022, you will then have the screen where you can say that it did not involve an intent to earn money.

Thank you for the respond! I have some other professional told me that instagram should not issue me a 1099-misc because the payment is through 3rd party so i should file the 1099k issued by paypal first , and some other people told me that i should file both and then deduct one 1099 as expenses so its the correct amount at the end, i'm just wondering if they are also correct or not? appreciate

The correct action is to report the income once on your tax return. However, to make a clean sweep so that all of the income is reported, (no question from IRS about missing income), then you can choose to enter the income from both vendors. Take an expense deduction for the amount that is duplicated as some others mentioned.

The key is to keep all of the documents with notes in a safe place along with the tax return so that you can explain it all down the road, should you ever need to.
