We received the 3rd Stimulus check earlier in 2021. It was based on my 2019 taxes where I had a child dependent listed. She turned 18 in 2021.

Now she is filing for her first time and it asks if she received the $1400 (3rd Stimulus) last year (2021) and she did not; we (parents) did. So should she say yes that she got it or not?

On my own taxes, when I got to the stimulus money it asked if I got the $2800 for my wife and me, and I answered that I got $4200 (since I got the $1400 for my youngest daughter based on my 2019 return). I do not think it likes that answer because now I am being asked about Advance Payments received. It asks about the Letter 6419, which I do not have and of course, the IRS does not have it online yet.

What do I do?

Letter 6419 is about the child tax credit, not the stimulus payment. If you received a stimulus payment you will get letter 6475.

If your daughter CANNOT be claimed on a 2021 tax return then she can receive the EIP payment---also called the stimulus payment--- as a recovery rebate credit on her 2021 tax return. SHE did not receive it---you did. That is not the same thing.

But it is important to understand the rules----if she CAN be claimed then she has to say on her own return that she can be claimed as a dependent.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/dependents/help/when-do-i-have-to-answer-yes-to-being-claimed-as-a-dependent/00/1994319

She is not claimed as a dependent on our 2021 tax return.

If I did not receive any child tex credit (to my knowledge, I only received the stimulus money), will I still receive a Letter 6419? I have not received one. I only got the Letter 6475 this past Friday.

The reason I ask is when I tried to complete the taxes on TurboTax, I get to a point it takes me to Schedule 8812 and asking for information from Letter 6419.

Concerning Letter 6475, are there known issues about inaccurate information on it, such as the amount? I want to complete the taxes correctly, but Letter 6475 indicates an amount that is lower than I thought I received. I am trying to wait until 01/31/22 to see if the IRS website has an updated/different amount. I want to do it correctly.

If you did not receive any advance child tax credit payments during July to December you are not going to get letter 6419.

But you do have to answer the questions anyhow. The software does not know if you got the letter or got any advance CTC.

If you think letter 6475 is incorrect, check your online IRS account.

https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account

And check your own banking records for a record of receiving that 3rd EIP payment.

Thank you for Letter 6419 insight. I was frustrated with myself because I did not have it (Letter 6419) and was wondering why I did not have it.

I tried checking the IRS website on payments but nothing is posted yet on it and it states that the information will be posted on 01/31/22. So I will need to wait and see what information they will have.

We are in the exact same situation with our son. I just got off the phone with the IRS after waiting for almost 2 hours on hold but thankfully received an answer.

Your daughter cannot claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if you already received the $1400 for her as part of the your 3rd Economic Impact Payment.

The problem is that TurboTax makes you answer that question and if you say "No" and $0 it will generate the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet and enter $1400 on 1040 line 30.

I tried manually deleting those two forms but doing that triggers a "Check this number" issue during review. The solution is to enter "Yes" and $1400 which will keep it from doing either of those things.

The guy at the IRS said they are getting an unprecedented number returns delayed due to the errors caused by this behavior with TurboTax.
