when I fill in my state I am asked If I lived in another state I said yes and put that state in the proper place. Then they asked when I lived in that state. I put down 10-30-1997. they came back and said i couldn't use a date pryor to 01/01/2021. I refuse to lie on my return. Now what am I supposed to do???

It didn't ask if you ever lived in another state. It asked if you lived in another state in 2021. It wants to know if you moved during 2021. If you lived in the same state for all of 2021 you answer No.

The question is asking if you lived/moved to a different state in 2021. The reason for that being that if you lived/moved in 2 separate states in 2021, TurboTax wants to make sure your income is being sourced to the correct state. If you did not change states in 2021, you will mark that question as a NO. TurboTax is only focusing on tax year 2021 and not the time period before it.
