NOTE: The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due” to the IRS.

And…..Ignore that “refund monitor.” The software STARTS OFF by giving you the full amount of CTC. When you enter the amounts from your letter, the software reconciles the amount you received with the amount you can still get IF you are eligible to get the other half. You are NOT losing any of the credit; you are not being taxed on the credit. Don’t get confused by the reconciled amount. You got some of it already—-now you get the rest.

If you received the advance payment and are NOT eligible to get the other half, then it will not show up on line 28. (Such as in some cases where the wrong parent got the advance payments, etc.)

The problem is, we both received one with an amount in Box 1 but we only received the deposit for one child. The way it's set up, my spouse received one too with the same amount in Box 1 which is double counting what we actually received. For example, we only received $750 for my child. The IRS form shows me receiving $750 and my spouse receiving $750 which did not occur. Thanks.

Are you sure? If you have one child and received the six $250 payments between July and December that would have added up to $1500. $750 + $750 = $1500.

And for the remaining amount you should see $1500 on line 28 of your Form 1040.

Better check both of your IRS accounts and see if the IRS shows payments sent to each of you.

I actually didn't put the correct amount as I received $250 a month which equals the $750. I rechecked our bank account and he didn't receive an additional $750 either. I just checked with my other daughter and she said their forms are the same making it appear that each one of them received the same amount of money for their children in spite of them only receiving the amount once. I hope it's an IRS mistake as it doesn't make sense. Thanks!

$250 for 3 months is $750. $250 for 6 months which was what was supposed to happen is $1,500. it may be wrong but the IRS is saying you two got a total of $1500. it's always possible that some checks went astray especially if you changed bank accounts during the year.

the only way to deal with this is to contact the IRS. there is nothing Turbotax can do.

if you file and only report $750 the IRS will adjust your refund down by another $750 (or send you a bill if you end up owing) and send you a notice at which time you can respond, I would say it's preferable to get this rectified before you file.

Same here! We have two kids, and received $550 for both for 6 months for a total of $3300. But me and the wife both received our own individual letters that says $3300 on them and on Turbo Tax, it asks us to enter the number from box 1 from each form which totals $6600. We didn't make $6600. We made $3300 yet we go from a federal return of $7,593 down to $991. Thats a $6600 dollar difference. We didn't both receive $3300. We received $3300 total. This is a bunch of crap.

Do not double the amounts. Enter the correct amount you actually received by splitting each payment between you. Half of the full payment received in 2021 should be entered for each spouse. Then file your return.

@VVillyVV0nka
