There are 2 free military products but one has some pay grade limitations. I'll tell you about both.

Military E1-E5 get free Federal and State returns in the Free Edition or Deluxe Edition when using this page. Higher pay grades get a small discount.

The small print there says: "Simply use your military W-2 to verify rank and your discount will be applied when you file."

If that is the product you are using, be sure you go to that special page linked above each time you work on your return. Use the SIGN IN link in the top right corner of that military discount page.

There is another free product--TurboTax Free File Program--that all active military can use as long as the 2018 AGI is $66,000 or less. It is more powerful than regular Deluxe and can prepare all the usual Federal forms, even those that Deluxe cannot. It has free Federal and free state returns. There are no fees or upgrades.

The TurboTax Free File Program is located at the link below. If you already have a User ID at Online TurboTax, it will require you to set up a new User ID (new account) at the Free File website, since it is a different website, and the IRS requires it to be disconnected from the TurboTax commercial products.
