How will filing as an independent masters student be different from a undergraduate dependent student? I also work 20 hours a week as a G.A.

Hi Brigilli,

Simply going from undergraduate to graduate level studies does not trigger a special tax filing status.

However, here are some things to consider for your upcoming tax year:

1) Expect the school to issue you a W-2 for your GA work. Look for this form this coming January.

2) If you have student loans be on the lookout for a 1098-E form from the lender.

3) If you paid tuition another form to watch for is the 1098-T from the school.

You should also review eligibility for the lifetime learning credit!
