topic My husband didn’t have federal taxes withheld all year. I need my tax return due to car accident putting me out of work. Should I file married seperately or joint? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

My husband and I just got married in July last year so neither of us have filed married before. We split all finances 50/50 and make about the same paycheck. He told me today he didn’t have any federal taxes withheld all year. I’m frustrated because I’ve been out of work for the last 2 months from a car accident and was counting on a tax return for my lost wages. I imagine he will owe a lot and my refund will go towards his debt. My question is, would it be more beneficial for me to file separately? Or will that hurt us worse?

It depends on your entire situation. The best way to determine this is to create one or 2 more dummy accounts. Do your taxes as married filing jointly, then do a return for each of you individually. Compare the results. You can choose to file whichever way produces the best result.

If you don't have kids, aren't taking a student loan interest deduction and don't qualify for a few other credits, filing separate will not likely hurt you. But, it is best to put the numbers in to be sure.
