topic E-filing tax returns. in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

My daughter files her tax as "married filing separately" as she is married to a nonresident alien. Her husband does not have a SSN or ITIN and Turbotax treat this as an "error" and would not let my daughter file her tax using electronic filing. IRS does not require a nonresident alien who does not have US tax obligation to have a SNS or ITIN. Could Turbotax modified their tax software so that my daughter can e-file her tax return.

Thank you. John Yamasaki

No Your daughter can't e-file the income tax return without her spouse's valid SSN or ITIN. She could apply for her spouse's ITIN by submitting Form W-7 along with the completed 2020 1040 US individual tax return to the IRS and mail it to the address on the instruction.

See. instrucstion W7, link for help.
