To add a state, follow the steps below. Please note: If you have already mailed or e-filed your return, you would need to amend your tax return.

In TurboTax Online, sign into your account.
Select Tax Home in the left menu.
Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
Select 2020, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right area).
You should now be able to make any adjustments needed.
Once you are done making adjustments, you will need to e-file (Select Transmit Returns now) or print and mail your tax return.

Please note: If the state forms are not yet available you will not be able to complete your state tax return. You can check on your state's availability here.

I am using TurboTax Premier 2020. I have already used the Arizona State return. Now I want to purchase California. The software says that the cost will be $40 ("For just $40 we can finish your California taxes in minutes"). When I go to the purchase screen it asks for $45. How can I redeem the $40 offer?

What a crazy system. My Premier software said that it would cost $40 to complete my California return (second after my free Arizona return). Then when I immediately went to purchase the CA state download it asked me for $45. The first time that I called customer service, in the middle of the day. the wait was one hour. Instead I waited a day and called at 6 a.m. AZ time, with a very short wait.

The customer service lady from Pensacola was courteous, but it took half an hour, plus her taking over my PC computer, to get satisfaction - finally $35 plus tax. It turns out that TurboTax increased the price on the CA software add-on from $40 to $45 on March 1st. What kind of craziness is it to change the price in the middle of the tax season, particularly without changing the underlying software?

Yes, The early prices always expire in March. And you know it is now $25 to efile each state return including the first one. Or you can print and mail state for free. If you efile be sure to pay by credit card. If you have the fees deducted from your federal refund there is an extra Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California). Watch out for this screen.

FYI - there will be a delay in Desktop program between March 1 when the price goes up and the next time the program update comes out, usually on Thursdays. It will show the $20 price but you be charged 25.

Why am I not able to purchase a second state? When I click on Get Another State, the file is save and a new window pops up as "Let's Complete Your Purchase Online". However, the "continue" button does not respond. How do I get to the purchase?

I suggest that you call customer service. They were helpful in resolving my problem and giving me the pre-price-increase price for the second state. And what a rip-off!

OK. Click on state or the State Taxes Tab. Choose Arizona. If you are working in the product, you need to follow the directions on how to purchase and add the state.
