It appears Turbotax app on my Mac does NOT have the feature of automatic save while in progress as did TaxAct. This is my first year using Turbotax download. This is disappointing as one could lose their work by accident. So, you have to manually save file every so often. I thought turbotax is a more sophisticated software in that regard. It's scary to not have this safety mechanism in the software.

"On Mac version, with software open as active window, click File in top left near the black apple and TurboTax in far left corner of the computer screen and then click Save. Name file as something you can remember and save to desktop or another place you can easily access when needed".

I've been in a panic for hours because I thought I saved my file last night, but it was gone today. I had to restart my Mac in Safe Mode because I lost my printers. And when I restarted normally turbotax couldn't find any recent files or any of the information I put in yesterday. But by looking for where my 2018 files were saved, I found something called "unsaved turbotax document" in library >autosave information which was what I saved last night. Turbotax never asked me where to save it or what to name my file.

So the top of the turbotax window shows my file name is "unsaved turbotax document" and I guess if I save it again it will just save it on top of this ridiculous file name,. This is not good.

Why am I not given the chance to name this file?

That would only happen if you quit TurboTax without saving first.

Use File -> Save (with the option key pressed) and it will become "Save As" and yiu can save it anywhere with whatever name you want. That is a standard Mac feature and not a TurboTax feature.

Autosave is a Mac feature, not a TurboTax feature and is always on unless inhibited in Mac system preferences.
