Tell TurboTax that the taxpayer did not receive any stimulus payments. That will put a recovery rebate credit on the tax return. The IRS will reduce the credit for any stimulus payments that were made, and send a letter explaining the reduction. Be aware that the person probably did get the payments, so you will not get the refund amount that is shown on the tax return that you file.

I assume that the person died in 2020 or 2021. If they died before 2020 they are not entitled to any recovery rebate credit.

@rjs - and technically... what you state is true for the 2nd stimulus only. For the first stimulus if someone died prior to receiving the 1st stimulus, the estate is to send it back (not saying there are any teeth in that , but that is what occurred - google it)

for the 3rd stimulus they are not entitled to it if they died prior to 1/1/21.

Google doesn't make the tax rules. Here's what the IRS says.

"If a first payment was made to someone who died prior to January 1, 2020, it should be returned to the IRS. . . ."

That is A5 at the following link on the IRS web site.

thx for identifying the IRS change on this issue. Note the FAQ was just updated a few weeks ago. That makes the whole issue a lot easier as most will be able to keep it.
