I submitted my return on approximately 3/10; prior to the unemployment compensation being changed to non-taxable. My return was accepted by the IRS and a check has been received for my refund. But now the software has apparently been updated because it shows my return to be different than what was filed. It shows my taxable income to be less due to unemployment compensation not being taxable and therefore refund much higher even though I have already received refund in the mail. So question is, do I need to file an amended return with IRS in order to receive additional amount of refund?

For now, the IRS says to wait for further instructions. They may be able to adjust people's returns and send out refunds without requiring amended returns, but they have not officially announced that yet.

First be sure the check you received is your tax refund and not one of the stimulus amounts for example. Does it match what you originally filed? If so, you may need to amend, but I recommend waiting a bit longer to amend just to be sure the IRS doesn't correct and send you an additional amount. The IRS is still saying do not amend at this time.

Should you need to amend later. Just select the amend option at sign in to your TurboTax account. Be sure you have a copy of the original filing as you will need to enter information from it on the 1040X.

@DMarkM1 wrote:

@DMarkM1 FYI,

This is the current behavior of the TT Desktop program if the customer claimed unemployment. Because of the change to the program implementing the exclusion, someone can open a previously filed return and see that the refund amount has changed in the program without the customer actually doing anything to the program. (This is a mistake of programming in my opinion, Turbotax should not change the filed tax return unless the customer takes affirmative action, in my opinion, but I am not a programmer.). Because the program has changed the tax refund, it's not clear the program can even be used to amend, unless the programming is changed. For now, customers who have already submitted tax returns containing fully taxed UEC should wait for an announcement from the IRS.
