I called and talked with a representative. She informed me that our information was correct and that we do qualify for the $1,100 for our baby born in 2020. She then transferred me to the Economic Impact Payment specialist who stated that I have to file an amended return to receive that money. I tried to access the amended tax return but since I claimed it on our return I am not sure how to get it fixed.

Why was my Recovery Rebate removed from my refund for my baby born in 2020? We did not receive stimulus money for him in any of the stimulus payments so we claimed the rebate on our taxes. We just received our refund minus the rebate credit.

It depends. The IRS states that your Recovery Rebate Credit will be adjusted if your child's social security number and name entered on your tax return does not match with what is on their Social Security card. If this information does not match or it was left blank on your 2020 return, the amount associated with that number would be denied.

If you identify an error in the tax return entry, contact the IRS directly and have a copy of the Social Security card available.

If there is no error with their name or social security number, then they advise to contact them directly at 800-829-1040.

No. You can only amend your return if the credit was not originally on your tax return. The IRS will send you a Notice in the mail shortly detailing the reason why they adjusted your Recovery Rebate Credit. At that point, you have to contact the IRS.

If the IRS representatives state that you did qualify for the $1,100, then please ask them why they adjusted it? You can't file an amended return for something that was on your original return.

Please see 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit — Topic G: Correcting issues after the 2020 tax return is filed
