Hello I don't know of ever asking for an id protection pin, is there a way to find out why I have to have one? I tried to retrieve it and apparently the letter with my idpp was sent to my ex mother in law's house who passed away about 8 years ago and nobody lives at the address idk y they have that address i.never lived there my parents live across across the street but I just wonder y they have that address and how do I get any info

Have you ever filed before? The IRS would have your address from last year's tax return. Is this your first year filing a tax return?

An IP-PIN might have been obtained by your parents, or another taxpayer who was authorized to claim you as a dependent, if someone stole your social security number and tried to file a tax return in your name or claim you as a dependent.

Start by creating an account on the IRS web site in your own name, and then you may be able to retrieve your IP-PIN online.

It may be tricky to verify your identity to get the IP-PIN if the IRS has been previously notified that you were a victim of identity theft. You may have to go to your local IRS office, appointments are usually required.
