The IRS sent you a Letter 5071C to verify your identify. This is a good thing. These letters help stop tax fraud.

If you cannot verify your identity over the phone or Internet, the IRS will ask you to schedule an appointment and bring the documents listed above to your local IRS office to verify in person.

@msartain1 Sorry for the bad news. Keep in mind, this is NOT an audit. The IRS is only interested in verifying your identity.

If you have all your paperwork it should be quick and easy. They won't ask questions about your tax return unless the questions are related to ID verification.

My 88 year old father received a 5071C. We have been unable to get through on the phone since they are "too busy to take our call" and hang up on us. We have been unable to verify his ID online. He is homebound and cannot go to an in person meeting with the irs. This has been a nightmare.

The best resource for you may be the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). They are in place to assist in situations where you are unable to obtain resolution on your own.

Submit a request for assistance - Form 911 Request for TAS Assistance (instructions are included)
Locate the local TAS Office for your area

This will get the process started for you. It's not going to be a fast process because they are handling a large volume at this time.

If you do not hear from TAS within one week of submitting Form 911, contact the Taxpayer Advocate office where you originally submitted your request. Incomplete information or requests submitted to a Taxpayer Advocate office outside of your geographical location may result in delays.
