Utah state identification

I have tried everything and turbo tax and other tax services will not take Utah’s identification number, it keeps saying it needs fixed , I’ve made sure it’s correct , deleted it , put it back on still gives an error , please help so I can file.

There's 9 numbers and 3 letters at the end WTH, do I take the letters out and add a 0?

No. The Utah TC W40(1) payer ID must be 14 characters. If form W-2 or 1099 does not include this number, contact the employer or payer to get the correct number to enter. The first eleven characters should be numeric and the last three are “wth.”

Example: 12345678901wth.

Utah will NOT accept any other version for the Payer ID.

I have the state identification number on my 1099, with 9 digits and 3 letters , I enter it into turbo tax and it throws me an error , I've tried upper case letters lowercase , adding a 0 , it still doesn't take it , I called utah unemployment to see if there's a different number , they say there's not.

Do you have such a number on any other form? What kind of 1099 is it? You said "unemployment," so is it a 1099-G? Does your number end in wth (most commonly)? Some end in wmp but that's for mineral production withholding.

Several users have reported they had to use lower case for the wth for the Utah Payer withholding number. It should be entered without dashes. You need to do this on all forms that have a Utah withholding number that ends in wth: W-2, certain1099's, etc. Do you have it on any other form?

Since you've played around with it a number of times, if it were me, I'd delete the 1099 completely and re-enter the 1099 info from scratch, using lower case for the last 3 characters. Sometimes deleting a form completely will reset something.

Please send me the correct Utah payer state ID number. TurboTax Deluxe is telling me the number needs to have 14 characters. My 1099-R has too short of a number. Thanks

It's best to contact the financial institution who issued the Form 1099-R. The federal ID number may work without the dash for this particular form.

The Utah employer identification number does has the following format for W-2 forms:

Utah requires all Forms W-2 reporting Utah income to have a 14-digit employer ID for Box 15. The employer ID should be an 11-digit number followed by either WTH or WMP (Ex: 01234567890WTH)
Contact the Utah Tax Commission for further clarification if you are unable to reach your financial institution.

It's a simple question... What is the Utah State ID number? So far I've seen descriptions and where to find it. no. Tell me what the number IS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Sorry Ian, no one can tell you that. The number depends on exactly who issued the tax form you are working on. There are thousands of different numbers.

.....and for those who follow this later, the final three letters must be lower case.... wth, (or in some cases wmp ). (OH WAIT...or was that upper case WTH...now I'm confused as to which it was supposed to be !! whichever you used, try the other)

For those who take a picture of the form, be careful, the stupid AI sometimes sticks a "UT" at the start of the number.....the "UT" needs to be in its own separate field. (I prefer manual entry...just don't trust the AI at all)

I ran in to this issue too and had to work with customer support for about 30 minutes. We just needed to delete the UT.

There's not enough info to know what you are referring to and in what context. So I'll take a guess. Are you trying to enter a W-2 or 1099 and need to enter the Utah employer's state ID number (which should be on the form.) Each employer has their own unique Utah state ID number.

If you have Utah W-2 with income and withholding, the employer should have a Utah state employer ID that ends in wth. It should be a total of 14 characters--11 numbers and then an additional 3 letters-- most commonly wth (note: mineral withholding will have wmp instead.) Be sure to use lower case for the 3 letters. Do not use any hyphens or spaces.

Also if there was Utah withholding on a 1099, the Utah employer state ID number should be entered for the 1099--again 14 characters, consisting of 11 numbers followed by wth (or wmp for mineral). Again, use lower case.

Thank you for clarifying that the field is case sensitive. My employer for the past three years sends my w-2 with WTH capitalized and TurboTax uploads it that way. Each year I've talked to TT customer support and they haven't had an answer. Finally don't have to file manually!

You're welcome. It's an unusual quirk for Utah, and TurboTax has had several years to fix it and hasn't. Good luck!
