Declaring immigrant status on 1040 (2020)

Hello,

My question is related to this news report (0:43 specifically) about changes by the IRS to 1040 for green card holders. As per the report, green card holders are somehow required to declare they are foreign nationals. I found this previous conversation where someone mentioned it goes into effect starting tax year 2020 and indicated entering foreign country with a U.S. address is not correct.

What is the right way to do this? Also, how can I achieve this on turbotax? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is no way to declare that you are a foreign national, or to declare your immigrant status, on a 2020 tax return. You are looking at information that is over a year old. And a news report and an online conversation are not official IRS sources. I can't find a definitive statement, but I have to assume that that requirement was dropped, since there is no way to do it, and no mention of it in IRS sources. For federal income tax purposes, a green card holder is treated the same as a U.S. citizen.
