You must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was over $1,100.
• Your earned income was over $12,400.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of—
• $1,100, or
• Your earned income (up to $12,050) plus $350.

you must also file if

You had net earnings from self-employment (you should have gotten form 1099-NEC if paid more than $600 by any one "employer" ) of at least $400.

If you are a W-2 employee, you'd also need to file a return if you want to get any withholding back that was taken out of your pay, i.e., a tax refund.
