Unfortunately, married is married in the eyes of the IRS.

If you were still married on December 31st 2020, you should file as Married Filling Separate.

I suggest you contact your estranged spouse and 1. ask for the Social Security Number, 2. discuss the issue of divorce.

You can file without the SSN but you have to file by mail, you can’t e-file. Attach a written statement giving your spouse’s name and any identifying information you do know, such as last known address and date of birth. TurboTax might not even allow you to print a form for mailing unless you use a fake SSN; you can try 999-88-9999 and then erase it or cover it with white out before filing.

Also, if you provide care in your home for a qualifying person who lives with you more than half the year, usually a child dependent, then you can file as head of household, in which case you don’t need your spouse‘s SSN and you can e-file.
