So...I got the 2nd check deposited into my open account because I updated it through turbo tax from the closed account. Why was my 3rd stimulus deposited into the closed account instead of the open one that I updated it to. I filed 2020 taxes with my open bank account also. And it was still sent to my closed account

To update your bank account for future stimulus checks, go to the Get My Payment site. That is the most up-to-date information for stimulus checks. You can update it now for any new round of stimulus payments after payment 3.

You are not alone with this problem and, in truth, it is a bit concerning that either the IRS or TurboTax is sending and/or receiving incorrect bank information. The last time I used my checking account for a transaction with the IRS was in 2017 when I paid my 2016 taxes. Since then, I paid my 2017 & 2018 taxes directly out of my savings account. Yet my Round 1 stimulus was direct deposited into my checking account (something that I didn't notice at the time). When I filed my 2019 taxes, I directed that refund into my savings account. My Round 2 stimulus money was direct deposited into my savings account. I haven't filed my 2020 taxes yet. According to the IRS web site, my Round 3 money is being direct deposited into my checking account.

And it's even worse for my son (who really needs the money!!). His Round 1 payment was deposited into his checking account in another state. The account is still active but he has since moved to this state. His Round 2 payment was sent to him in a credit/debit card.....weeks and weeks after everybody else got theirs. I guess the IRS decided that since his address was in the new state and his account was in his old state, they shouldn't use the old (but still current) account). We can't find the status of his Round 3 payment because the IRS tool doesn't recognize either the info from his 2019 tax return or from his recently filed (and accepted, per TurboTax) 2020 return. So I guess he'll have to wait 2 months before he gets a new credit card. Let's hope the IRS doesn't just "refill" the previously issued card but who knows if he still has that or if he spent that money and discarded the card!

And this is how we run a country....?!

Your bank account information cannot be changed.

The bank account information in Get My Payment came from one of the following sources:

Your 2020 tax return

Your 2019 tax return if your 2020 return was not processed when the IRS started issuing payments

Information you entered on your non-filer registration in 2020

Information you entered on Get My Payment in 2020

A federal agency that provides you benefits: This may include the Social Security Administration, Veteran Affairs, or the Railroad Retirement Board.

At some point, this IRS FAQ will come into play. We do not know when.

This IRS FAQ My payment was mailed but my post office was unable to deliver it. states:

Once we receive your payment back, you may be able to provide your bank account information in Get My Payment to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit.

If this is the case, then Get My Payment will show “Need More Information,” usually two to three weeks after the payment is issued. At this point, you can enter a routing and account number for your bank account, prepaid debit card or alternative financial product that has a routing and account number associated with it.

If you do not provide account information, your payment will be reissued when we receive an updated address.

If you need to update your address, the easiest way to do it is by filing your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you haven’t already done so. The fastest way to file the return and update your address is to file the return electronically.

What we do not know is how quickly the IRS will update your stimulus information after your 2020 Federal 1040 tax return is filed, accepted and refund issued.
