You enter each W-2 separately --- one by one--- and enter the boxes as they appear. You do not have to choose which box 12 to enter.

Every 2020 W-2 that you received must be reported on your 2020 tax return, even if they are for small amounts. Remember that each one of those W-2’s has your Social Security number on it, and that income was reported to the IRS by the employer. You do not want to get in trouble with the IRS for under-reporting your income.

ALL of your W-2’s must be entered on the SAME tax return.

Go to Federal>Wages & Income to enter a W-2.

After you enter the first one, you click Add Another W-2.

W-2's come from your employer, and they have until February 1 to issue it. Some employers allow you to import the W-2 through the software, but for security reasons you still need information from the actual W-2 to import it. You might need to phone, drop in, email and/or snail mail an old employer to make sure they know where to send your W-2.

And….SAVE YOUR OWN W-2! TURBOTAX DOES NOT SAVE IT FOR YOU. TurboTax will not have a copy of it in your account and will not have an image even if you snapped a photo. It is up to you to save it for your own records as stated on the back of the W-2.

For some reason box 1 in both W2's are identical so when combined it makes my salary seem almost double. Is this a problem from my employer or turbotax?

Do you mean that both W-2's are from the same employer? You did not change jobs when you moved and are not asking about two W-2's from different employers---your question only said you moved to a different state.

Ask your employer about the W-2----now it sounds like they sent a W-2 for the same yearly amount and put everything on each one except for changing one of the boxes. What about box 16 and 17---are those different?

If you do have two W-2s from the same employer and the income in Box 1 is included on both for the entire year, this could be doubling your income. If this is the case enter only one W-2 manually for this employer.

In Box 12, combine the entries if they are the same code to make one entry. If there are different codes then add each one in Box 12.

For the state wage and withholding section be sure to add each state where you worked using the appropriate wages earned for each state based on the time period of residency. Also enter the correct withholdings for each state if applicable.

Delete the second W-2 to eliminate double income amounts. Match your final pay stub in December with the W-2 for accuracy on the total income for the year.
