Hi,

I have a family member who has yet to receive any of the stimulus checks due to a change in address. They were sent back to the IRS.

Question is, when they file their taxes for 2020, should they file for the recovery rebate credit of the full amount? This year I convinced them, when they file their taxes to set up direct deposit. So they should receive a full credit of both amounts?

Question is, when they file their taxes for 2020, should they file for the recovery rebate credit of the full amount?

Yes they should. $1800 per person.

This year I convinced them, when they file their taxes to set up direct deposit. So they should receive a full credit of both amounts?

Yes they should. $1800 per person.

And they should be very grateful for your very good advice.

Yes, if the checks were sent back, they never received the amount. The IRS is not going to hold the checks and try to find the Taxpayers. The only way now to get the first and/or second stimulus payments that were not received is to file a 2020 tax return and claim the Recovery Credit.

TO GET TO THE STIMULUS SECTION OF TURBOTAX:

Go into your account and click "Tax Home"

On that screen click "Other Tax Situations"

When the drop-down opens, click "Let's Get Started" or "Review/Edit" to move forward

There may be a delay when opening to this next screen

Scroll to the bottom of this screen and click "Let's keep going"

The next screen should read "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" (If not, click continue to move forward until you do get to that screen)

Scroll down and click "Continue"

The next screens will ask if you received the stimulus, which ones and how much.

The software will calculate a credit if applicable.
