Yes

Follow the prompts to file a paper return. TurboTax will also give you the address to file based on your current residence. Follow the instructions to file a paper return. You will need to sign the return. Keep a copy or print 2 copies - one for your records.

Thanks, is there a certain section I should look in to get that information? The chat bot was telling me I needed to purchase and download Turbo Tax 2019 desktop, but I shouldn’t have to do that, right?

Yes just print it and mail it. You did not have to wait for your dad to amend. You could have mailed it a long time ago. But go ahead and mail it in---use a mailing service that will track it like certified mail so you will know it was received. A 2019 return is not going to show up on the IRS refund site. Only 2020 returns show up there.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Thanks - the printout is roughly 118 pages. Is that right? In terms of attaching W-2s, do I need to include the original? Or would the entered W-2 information on the printout suffice? (Similar to e-filing when it's is just entered and filed online)

ouch. do not mail 118 pages to the IRS.

Use the "forms needed for filing " option which should be less than five pages usually.

I figured as much. Do you have any idea where that "forms needed for filing" option is? I've contacted phone support and they were unfortunately unable to point me to it.

For which forms are needed for filing, you would have to look through the PDF and not include extraneous worksheets. However, it is good to include statements referenced on any official forms. Official forms are named in the top left and bottom right corners of the page, such as Form 1040, Schedule 1, etc.

To have TurboTax determine what forms are needed for filing, download the .tax 2019 file into the 2019 TurboTax CD/Download. If the 2019 Tax Return was already paid for, contact TurboTax and ask for them to push you a download for 2019. See: What is the TurboTax phone number?

Since you are not claimed as a dependent, to receive both the stimulus payments if they have not been received, include the Recovery Rebate Credit in the 2020 tax year return.

To do this in TurboTax, follow these steps:

Go to the search box and enter stimulus. Click the Jump to link.

Answer Yes.

At the next screen, Let's double-check the amount you received, answer No to edit the first-round and second-round amounts.

If no stimulus amount was received, enter 0. An amount must be entered in each box. When finished, click Continue.

Since 2019 was not received by the IRS, use 0 for the AGI to successfully e-file 2020.
