If you received the letter (Notice 1444) in the mail and have not received your payment as mentioned in the notice you will have to request a trace and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return, please see How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?

To claim the credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

Log into TurboTax.

After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.

On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".

You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received. If you did not receive a payment enter "0".

TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.

Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

Received the 1444-B notice that a EIP2 check/debit card would be forthcoming, but as of March 5, nothing came so I initiated a trace. I received the first stimulus check okay. The question I have is, am I at risk having a double payment having issued a trace for the EIP2 and TurboTax saying I get a Recovery Rebate Credit? I don't want to mess things up having both mailed in the trace form and getting a credit for the same on taxes. I plan to file the federal return electronically.

Thanks 🙂

You have 2 options.

You can wait until you receive clarification from the IRS on the second stimulus payment before filing your tax return and adjust your input accordingly.

Your other option is to file your return as it is prepared now assuming you did not receive the second stimulus payment, and the Recovery Rebate Credit is correct as currently calculated on your tax return.

The IRS will adjust your tax return should they determine you receive both stimulus payments and notify you of the changes if any.

Correcting Recovery Rebate Credits on returns already filed
