occupation is optional but TurboTax insists.

put anything in there. I put "taxpayer".

If TurboTax is asking for an occupation, you may enter Disabled or Unemployed or any other description you want.

The IRS requires we ask about your occupation.
An occupation is what you do for work, but if you’re retired, a student or a stay-at-home parent, that can be your occupation as well.

with other tax software providers, occupation is optional.

I guess IRS puts special requirements on TurboTax.
