If I'm retired, and received a 1099-R, not a w-2, why is this insisting that I put in a state and zip code for my employer if I have none. It would not let me file without putting something in there. I have no idea where my old employer is located anymore. I put in the state and zip for the company that sends the money.

Sounds like you are trying to enter your 1099R in the wrong place.

To enter your retirement income, Go to Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA 401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

I put it in the right place. Something wrong in Turbo Tax causing this. I've been using Turbo Tax for 8 years, and never had this happen before.

The screen where you enter a 1099R asks you for a Payer Name, Payer address and a Federal ID . It does not ask for an employer. If you are trying to enter your 1099R on a screen that is asking for an Employer---you are on the wrong screen.

You don't understand. This had nothing to do with what I entered. This all happened at the very end, when I was trying to file. Turbotax came back on the form showing those areas. It would not let me file without putting something into the blanks. It did not end up appearing anywhere in the actual filing papers. I think I could have put anything in there. It just wanted something there. I've already filed, I just wanted to give other people a heads up if there was an issue like that for someone else.

Maybe a W2 transferred over from last year? You need to delete it. But you were able to file? How?
