I have paid taxes on the 1099DIV received each year on my life insurance. The dividends were reinvested and are not reflected on the 1099R as a contribution. Can I adjust the amount in Box 5 to reflect the reinvested dividends since they were already taxed?

I think what you mean is that you received a distribution from your life insurance investment, a portion of which is after taxed money you reinvested in the fund. So, you may be correct in assuming that a portion of the proceeds would not be taxable.

However, if the form 1099-R does not reflect this by having an entry in box 5, you want to know if you can enter an amount on your own?

That would not be recommended both because the IRS will compare your entry with their copy of the 1099-R form and may question your entry, and it would invalidate TurboTax's accuracy guarantee as you would have modified an entry form.

I suggest you ask the issuer of the form why they did not make the entry and if it is in error, request that they issue you a corrected form.

That is exactly what I meant and thank you. Now if I can only get the insurance company to reply to me.

Paul
