I am applying for an ITIN for my spouse as this is our first time filing jointly. I used a CAA for completing the form W-7 and dropped off my federal return. He mailed it to the address mentioned in the instructions :

ITIN Operation
P.O. Box 149342
Austin, TX 78714-9342

When I checked the tracking details it looks like USPS delivered it to zip code 73301. I am not sure if my package got routed due to some issue. Should I inquire with IRS or USPS as to what might have happened?

You should inquire to make sure your application got to the right place. 73301 is the address for a W-7A Application for Adoption Tax Identification Number:

Department of the Treasury

Internal Revenue Service

Austin, TX 73301-0066

Try calling 855-723-2060, ext. 244.

I had used the 78714 address on the mailing envelope and that's what is also present on my USPS receipt. I am not sure if I should check if USPS first before checking with the IRS. Do they generally get mails redirected from one location to another?

I have the exact same issue. I sent it at the end of November with original passport and have heard nothing yet. I finally got through to the IRS after about 10 days of attempting to call them. They have referred my case to ITIN operations as they can’t see the renewal in the system. Someone will get back to me within 30 days. I sent the w-7 to the ITIN operations address but the delivery confirmation says “mail room/reception/front desk” Austin TX 73301. USPS are also looking into it for me. I’m stressed out about it, but I believe that zip code is a virtual zip code for the IRS and hoping that it’s all fine and there are just severe processing delays due to Covid.

Wow no updates for four months? That makes me nervous. We are yet to file our state taxes since we need the ITIN for it, I guess we need to file for an extension.

If you don't mind could you share what number you used for getting in touch with IRS? Was it the one ending with 1040?

Well it was received on December 7th, so that’s 12 weeks, just outside the 11 weeks they say it could take. The ITIN number I am renewing is for my dependent son so IRS agent I spoke to said we could go ahead and file the tax return in the meantime, it just might affect our refund a little bit.
My biggest concern is that it may have been delivered to the wrong part of the IRS, but I’m comforted that you also had it delivered to the 73301 zip code. I just want my son’s passport back!
I had no luck with the number ending in 1040. I finally got through to someone with this phone number - 1-800-908-9982. It took several tries but much better than that other number. Please post here if you ever get an answer about delivery confirmation! I will too!

I just saw this update on the IRS website, so it looks like they are probably just getting to my W-7 now. So I would expect 12-16 weeks for processing now instead of 7-11

Update - I received the passport back from

the IRS and they confirmed that that W7 is being processed. It took about 90 days for me to get the supporting docs back. Nor delays due to Covid.

That's great! It's going to be a long wait for us going by the timeline. Hopefully we get it in time for filing our CA return.

I have the same issue. I sent my 1040 forms to be filed with a W-7 application and supporting documents for my spouse to the ITIN operation zip code 78714 and my mail was routed to a 73301 zip code when I tracked it on the USPS website. Is this normal or should I call IRS and USPS and let them know?

Hi I wonder if you can help me with this I did the process with an IRS Aceptance Agent and he sent my tax papers together with my W7 to the Internal Revenue Service Austin TX 73301
It was delivered March 20 after 11 weeks I still waiting

i wonder if has been sent to the wrong address Thank you in advance
