In 2020, my employer accidentally made an extra contribution to my HSA account. I filled out a form to get the excess contribution taken out, in the form of check written to me from my HSA provider. They noted this amount will show up on my 2021 1099-SA as Excess.

What does this mean? Will I be taxed on this excess amount for my 2021 taxes? Or is this just more so for documentation purposes?

Thank you!

Yes, when you receive form 1099-SA in 2021, you will report it on your return and it is taxable because your contribution was made with pre-tax money.
