To request an extension for filing a federal tax return you will need to complete IRS Form 4868. E-filing of the extension request will be available from TurboTax in mid-March. There are no extensions for tax payments since any taxes owed on a 2018 tax return must be paid on or before April 15, 2019 to avoid a failure to pay penalty.

So, since I live in Alabama, the state should grant me an automatic 6-month extension on filing when I file the Form 4868 out for the Federal extension, right? Therefore, I will only need to pay them the amount that I owe for State taxes before April 15th? (Since I will receive a refund on the federal return instead of owing them, unlike the State return which shows I owe them a small amount instead of a refund)
