Pay any Turbo Tax fees with your credit or debit card. If you pay directly from your refund, which may seem easier, they sneakily charge you an extra $40, which I was too stupid to notice. They call it a "refund processing service fee," and do not tell you that you can easily avoid it if you just pay your fees with a credit card.

I agree with you claim.

Additional, for the state of California, Turbo Tax offer Free option to pay with Federal Refund then charges $45 for Audit defense.
They bundle a free option with a proprietary service.

The bright side is I caught it before I finished filing and used a credit card.
