The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return. If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check this year, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021—if you are eligible.It will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that when you entered information about the child who was born in 2020 in My Info that you say your child lived with you for the whole year. You have to say that for a newborn in order to get the child-related credits---and you have to enter the child's Social Security number.

to get a 500 credit with Donald J Trump's name on it, you had to have a child in 2018 or 2019.

@tsubia93 - how many children are we talking about, how old are they on 12/31/20? Why did you write 'another $500'? It's $500 per child even those born in 2020.

But there is a weird twist that is not going to be very common. Let's say you have two children: a child that is 17 years old this year and a newborn, born in 2020. And since the payments from last spring were based on 2019 tax returns when the 17 year old was only 16, you may have received $500 for the older child in the spring. But now, when you go through the settle-up on Line 30, the 17 year old isn't eligible for the payment, but the new born is. So there wouldn't be an additional $500 for the additional child in this unique situation; you have one child that is under 17 as of 12/31/20 that is eligible for the $500 and you received $500 last spring..,.so nothing more is due.

@fanfare - not tracking with your comment....since all the stimulus calculations are based on the 2020 tax return (see Line 30 and the accompanying schedule to calculate it), anyone who qualifies for the stimulus who had a child in 2020 will get up to $500 on Line 30; obviously there was no way for the IRS to send that $500 earlier in the year when everything was based on 2018-2019 tax returns. I did find it somewhat humorous that the CARES act was signed into legislation in March, 2020 so even children not conceived on the date the Act was signed but are born by 12/31/20 will qualify their parents for the $500 on Line 30.

I agree with @xmasbaby0 - the two most common errors are 1) failing to input the child's social security number as well as 2) failing to mark the child as living with you for the whole year (look at the instructions on that screen CLOSELY), even though technically that isn't true since the child was born sometime during 2020.

@NCperson I have 3 children altogether. By 12/31/20 they will be 7, 16 months and 4 months. I received $1700 on my stimulus, $1,200 for me and $500 for 1 of my children (I’m assuming my oldest).. so I was missing $500 for my second. I was told I would be able to claim my 4 month old during my income tax and receive another $500 for him. However when I inputted during the stimulus part of turbo tax that I only received $1700 they said only $500 was due to me.

So on your 2019 return your second child was only 4 months old? Did your 2019 return show the child as a qualifying child or just as a other dependent? When did you file 2019? If it was later they may have based your Stimulus Check on your 2018 return.

Make sure all 3 children show up as dependents and qualifying children. A child born (even on Dec 31) is considered to live with you the whole year. So pick the Whole Year at the top of the drop down box. Go back and check it under My Info. And check your 2019 return that you got credit for the one born in 2019 too.

Yup - I get it - you should see $1,000 on Line 30 of Form 1040; something is missing somewhere.

The two most frequent errors:

1) social security number missing - check all three children

2) on the box that asks how long the child has lived with you, be sure to pick 'the whole year' for the newborn.

Also, check the birthyears for all three children.... any chance you typed '2000' instead of '2020' for the newborn? that would deny the extra $500 because TT would think the child was 20!

all three children are living with you, right? (if they are not living with you for at least 6 months, you won't get the $500)

are you using the online or desktop version?

Thank you everyone! One of my children has the box checked under their social security number that wasn’t supposed to be! I got it figured out!!

@VolvoGirl under their social security number where it ask if they’re social security card said they couldn’t work. For some reason it was selected for my second son
