Online filing is closed at this time. The online software for 2020 will open in early December, but when it opens the software will ONLY be for 2020 returns--no other year.

It is already way too late for you to use TurboTax for a 2014 tax return. Software is available for 2017, 2018, or 2019. If you want to prepare a 2014 return you can use the paper forms and prepare the return by hand. If the form shows a refund, you have forfeited it already. If it shows that you owe tax due, you still need to pay.

https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

2014

Form 1040 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2014.pdf

Form 1040Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2014.pdf

Form1040A https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040a--2014.pdf

Form 1040A https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040a--2014.pdf

Form1040EZhttps://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040ez--2014.pdf

Form1040EZ Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040ez--2014.pdf

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

TurboTax does not support a 2014 tax return.

If you are due a tax refund for 2014 it will not be paid since it is over three years from the due date of the tax return. If you have taxes owed the 2014 tax return needs to be filed and the taxes paid.

Go to this IRS website for prior year forms, schedules and instructions - https://apps.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/priorFormPublication.html

Or use a local paid tax professional to assist you in completing the 2014 tax return.

TurboTax only keeps online tax returns for the last 7 years, then same as the IRS 7 year retention on federal tax returns.

It is way too late to file a 2014 return for a refund.

And TT only saves the last 7 years so access to 2013 is not worth the effort.

So if you believe your SS# has been compromised you should file a form 14039 so no one but you can file a return using your SS#.

Take the following steps:

(Most important) Follow the IRS procedures for reporting a fraudulent return, documented here: www.irs.gov/uac/Taxpayer-Guide-to-Identity-Theft

Monitor your credit reports through TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian for any suspicious activity.

File a police report with your local law enforcement agency.

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.identitytheft.gov or the FTC Identity Theft Hotline at 1-877-438-4338 or TTY 1-866-653-4261.

If your Social Security number is compromised and you know or suspect you are a victim of tax-related identity theft, take these additional steps:

Respond immediately to any IRS notice; call the number provided.

Complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. Then print and mail or fax according to the instructions.

Continue to pay your taxes and file your tax return, even if you must do so by paper.

Additional Resources

The IRS has a host of useful information and resources on tax-related identity theft:

A special section at IRS.gov dedicated to identity theft issues, including YouTube videos, tips for taxpayers, and an assistance guide.

For victims, the information includes how to contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit. For other taxpayers, there are tips on how taxpayers can protect themselves against identity theft.

Taxpayers who may be at risk for identity theft (for example, your wallet, purse, or computer was recently stolen) should visit the IRS identity protection page.

If you receive a suspicious email that appears to be from either the IRS or an organization closely linked to the IRS (such as EFTPS), visit the Report Phishing page at IRS.gov.

Click here for general information on how to report tax-related fraud to the IRS.

To prevent tax-related identity theft, see Protect Yourself from Identity Theft.

These sites can help you understand identity theft and how to protect yourself:

FTC Identity Theft Resource Center (www.ftc.gov/idtheft)

Identity Theft Resource Center (idtheftcenter.org)

OnGuardOnLine.gov

We're all vulnerable to this crime, but there are additional things you can do that will reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

If you file by mail, do it at a post office, not from an unlocked mailbox in front of your house.

If you file electronically, use a secure computer on a secure network.

Related Information:

I got a call from the IRS demanding money.
