My wife recently died, so besides grieving I have been so busy with so many people, SSA, Life insur, etc., so taxes became low priority. So this is a time sensitive question. Pls answer asap.

No. Just the Online web version will close. You can keep using the Desktop CD/Download program. But you can only efile until Oct 15. After that you will have to print and mail.

Sorry for your loss. We are dealing with a recent death and 93 mother is failing. Just a couple days left.

So sorry for your loss. No, the desktop (CD/download) software for your 2019 return will not freeze up and stop working. But after October 15, 2020 you will not be able to e-file the return, so you will have to print, sign and mail it instead of e-filing it.

You do know that you can still file a joint return, right? You say your spouse died recently.

. For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return. That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $24,000 (+ $1300 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info, there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have dependent children still living at home, you will be able to file as a qualified widow for the next two years after this tax return. Post back if you need further help.
