I am filing late and working on 2017. I got hit by an AMT, even though we have no investment losses or anything out of the extraordinary. Only by paying the proper state, and local taxes and have 4 dependent and owning a house. (We do have 4 teenagers, and unfortunately no money to invest). We also had an increase in our income and moved up a tax bracket from 24% to 28%. We have gotten back anywhere between 4-5k in all years prior to 2017. In 2017 my husband and I apparently owe close to $2000 (the AMT is $1350) whereas in 2016 I didn’t have any AMT.
I truly appreciate any input ~ Thank you!

Switch to the FORMS mode and review the AMT worksheet to see why you got hit with the AMT ...

How is AMT calculated?

The AMT calculation is complicated and beyond the scope of this article, but here’s an outline of how it works:

We start by figuring your AMT income (your AMTI) by adding certain deductions back into to your AGI. (This is the part that’s too complicated to explain here.)
Then we subtract your AMT exemption from your AMTI.
The result is then multiplied by the AMT tax rate to come up with your alternative tax.
- If your alternative tax is less than your regular tax, you’re exempt from paying it (most taxpayers fall into this group).
- If your alternative tax is more than your regular tax, you have to pay the difference. We account for this in your final tax refund or taxes owed amount – you don’t pay it separately.

Be aware the AMT rules changed in 2018 so it is possible you are looking at the wrong info on the form 6251...

In line 29 of form 6251 it refers to instructions if line 28 is over given amount. Where would I find the instructions?

The program has worksheets for everything like the IRS ... in the FORMS mode click on the amount on line 29 to data source it.
