Can One still efile 2018 tax returns using TurboTax software?

Can I use the TurboTax amend for 2018 if I had filed an extension for 2018?

If the original 2018 tax return was never filed then you cannot amend the 2018 tax return. An extension request does not file a 2018 tax return.

To complete and file a 2018 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the 2018 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

A 2018 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

On the phone call, someone told me if I have filed an extension I use the TurboTax amend software, I have access to in my account.

I have downloaded the TurboTax amend for 2018 and I am getting the same forms to be mailed as that I am getting from 2019 online TurboTax.

Does not this mean buying the Turbotax will generate the same forms for 2018?

Filing the 2018 extension does not mean that you can amend the 2018 tax return. As I said the IRS has not received your 2018 tax return if all you did was file a 2018 extension request.

The 2018 desktop software from the prior year website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ will Only have the 2018 tax forms, schedules and worksheets. The instructions in the 2018 software only apply to tax year 2018.

Using the free 2018 amendment program to complete an original return to mail in is actually a little known trick to avoid paying for the downloaded version. It can be used to complete a return that can be filed ... you just ignore the 1040X that is populated and mail in the 1040.

I have used the TurboTax amend and the pdf file has forms 1040, SCHEDULE 1 Form 1040, Form 8917
(Rev. January 2020). there is not form 1040X generated. Should I proceed with filing or but the TurboTax 2018 software?
