Yes, you still need to file an extension. Here's the site for IRS. https://irsextension.online/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=search&utm_campaign=[social security number removed]&utm_term=tax%20filing%20extension-b&utm_content=[phone number removed]08&src=bing&msclkid=7981cbeba0fe15fae5c294e4048a4bda

Your other option is to go ahead and file with the information you have and then file an amended return to add the additional information for a bigger refund.

One thing, if you think you owe, you need to send the amount you think you owe in with the extension.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I have a few questions

1. What if I do not file an extension since expecting a refund.

2. What if I file a extension as a single but later at the time of submitting return filed status as "Married Jointly"

Technically even if you file an extension and if you OWE money, IRS will still start accruing interest until you pay the money you owe since the last filing date of 07/15/20 this year.

If you have a refund then there will no be a penalty if you could not file the extension, however it is still a good idea to file the extension or the return subsequently as it is your money.

I'm not sure why you need to file the extension single now if you know it will be jointly as it will belong to two people. For some reason if you need to file single then have both of them file the extension just to be sure.
