Did you already file your return? After you file Turbo Tax is done and the IRS doesn't update Turbo Tax when they get your payment. Turbo Tax will always sow the full tax due or refund.thats just the end result of your tax return.

Or do you need to enter a payment you made into your return before you file it?

Let's say I fix your computer and send you a bill for $300. Then you pay that bill. The bill I sent you will not "magically" update itself to say you paid it.

Likewise when you complete your tax return and it shows you owe the IRS $300, when you pay that $300 to the IRS your tax return is not going to magically update itself either. Turbotax has no way of knowing that you actually paid what you owe. Your return will show that you owe that $300 forever.

If you're concerned about it, then simply attach your receipt of payment to your paper copy of the tax return, and file it away.

Thank you for all the comment, this was already so helpful 🙂

First off, sorry if these are simple questions. I am not from the US and figuring all this out for myself. Ok, so as for the IRS, how will they know how much I owe to them? And Chris, you mentioned to attach my receipts of payment to my paper copy of my tax return and file it... How do I do that? Do I file it again to TT or you mean the IRS.

And lastly, when you file through TT, you can download/print your tax return. What do I do with those papers? Or are they just for me to keep? And do I need to give them to the IRS in some way or not?

Thank you again for responding so quickly!

@laruschka1 What Carl suggested when he said "file it away" he meant file it in your own personal records--whether you have an actual filing cabinet, or wherever you keep your own financial records. He did not mean for you to mail it or send it anywhere again.

We do not know what you mean by paying a "part" of what you owed to the IRS. The amount you owed was on line 23 of your Form 1040--your tax return form. The amount you still owe is the difference between what you already sent and the amount on line 23--do the math. Federal tax due is supposed to be paid by July 15, 2020. After that date, it will be late, and there can be interest or penalties added.

If you have not already done so, print out your tax return and look at it. That is what you want to save for your own records, along with a record of how much you paid so far, and when you paid it.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-get-a-copy-of-a-return-i-filed-this-year-in-turbotax-online/00/25932

When you say you created an IRS account---do you mean you set up a payment plan with the IRS? If you did that, you will receive a letter from the IRS that explains how you will make your future payments.

We do not have quite enough information to understand what you have done and still might need to do.

And--I am also concerned about your remark, "I am not from the US". That has me wondering if you should have used TurboTax at all. Are you a non-resident alien? If so, you should not have used this software to prepare your tax return. Post back with further information.

Wow this was extremely helpful thank you so much!

I have set up a normal IRS account and then paid only a 'portion' of what I owe in federal taxes. I did not want to make a full payment just yet, so that I can make sure it works correctly. I paid through an eCheck.

I am not a citizen yet, but I am a permanent resident (Greencard holder). I am eligible to work and have to pay taxes. And I owe taxes because I am an individual contractor (1099).

amount you owe is your tax, less any amounts paid earlier and reported, as identified in my prior post.

amounts paid for "Form 1040, 2019" can be paid in parts, or all at once, but no later than July 15th (this year only, ordinarily April 15).
