If I have non-zero amounts in boxes 15-17 of my W-2s from both states but they're different, should I just use 15-17 from my non-resident state like you suggest?

Since my permanent residence is in Connecticut but I lived/worked in New York this summer, I received 2 sets of W-2s from my summer employer. The Connecticut W-2 lists all the income I made for the summer in box 1, but the New York W-2 lists $0 in box 1. TurboTax won't let me file online since the second W-2 says I made no federal income (there is still state income and state income tax listed in boxes 16 and 17 of my New York W-2). Is this a mistake or is there still a way to file?

What happened is your employer's system could not put all the info on one form for whatever reason ... so they issued a second W-2 for the "overflow" info for the second state ... you must "marry" the 2 forms onto one W-2 screen in the TT system ... it is just that simple ... don't over think it.

You can put multiple lines in for boxes 15-thru-17 (Add another row)..

I can't guarantee that the employer put all the correct values in each of those boxes though.....I worry sometimes about what these employers do with their W-2 entries in your situation.
