I accidentally filed the non-filer form on IRS's webpage thinking it was just for people who haven't file the 2019 tax return to submit banking information. Now I'm not able to e-file my tax. I've seen both suggestions of filing by paper and filing an amend tax. I'm confused about which one should I do now. Thanks!

No, there is no disadvantage of filing the Form 1040 (with either the notation at the top or a cover letter) over filing the Form 1040X. Either one will accomplish the task.

Yes, you will need to include copies of your W-2s and 1099s for your state return since it will also be filed by mail.

<LI-USER uid="2172146" login="eunos2345"></LI-USER>

You can go ahead and mail the tax return now. Processing your tax return is different than processing your stimulus payment.

Since the return is being filed by mail, it normally takes up to 16 weeks to process. But, this is not a normal situation and the IRS is not processing mailed returns right now. The bottom line is that you will need to be extra patient when waiting for your tax return to be processed.

<LI-USER uid="2172146" login="eunos2345"></LI-USER>

I also in error filled out the non-filer and got an accepted email. We had mailed in our return a few weeks before I filled out the non-filer info online. I saw a message that mailed returns were not being processed so thought I had to fill out the non-filer. Will this delay our stimulus payment? We paid in last year and are getting a very small refund this year.

I accidentally filed a nonfiler....I am in college and pay for it myself, but a family member just told me that I have been claimed as a dependent already and that I have now messed up everything for them. Is there any way I can delete the form or cancel the request? The whole point was for me to get the stimulus check.

I goofed and used the non filer: ENTER YOUR PAYMENT DETAILS(notice that doesnt read FILE YOUR NIL TAX RETURN) very early after it was introduced on 4/10. Many responses include condemnation for the error MANY of us made, but that set-up looked nothing like a return. It was a half page, 2 tab flim flam looking script a jr high class could have engineered. And it was misleading. I understand that NOW the associated guidance includes very clear warnings but early in its inception it wasnt that clear.

A person who had not filed taxes in recent years and had YET to file their 2019 return and also a person struggling and panicking that the IRS gets their deposit info, is the prime candidate for this error.

This is large scale whoopsiedaisy and it should warrant us a workaround fix so we may go ahead and efile our returns. We get our refunds, the IRS doesnt get a boatload of extra paper returns.

If the IRS is really going to stand behind it's new MODERNIZATION PLAN ... this would be a prime candidate situation to show us.

What's the benefit of mailing a paper return? Nothing. It can get lost. Someone could discern my 1s for 7s. It's nothing more than some antiquated form of punishment and it should be abolished. Efiling is more efficient, accurate and saves taxpayers money reducing the "old number2 and paper" returns.

Come on uncle Sam... help us out. This is our first time doing corona. It's your first time doing corona. We mess up it costs us 6 months waiting. You mess up ... we can like it or lump it. We learn from our mistakes. Delete those bogus nil returns now. They are absolutely worthless since you've gleaned ENTER PAYMENT DETAILS from them.

PEOPLE FIRST INITIATIVE : "In addition to extending tax deadlines and working on new legislation, the IRS is pursuing unprecedented actions to ease the burden on people facing tax issues. During this difficult time, we want people working together, focused on their well-being, helping each other and others less fortunate."

------

Sorry.

To answer your question, yes I received the stimulus check after mistakenly using the non filer ENTER YOUR PAYMENT DETAILS form. When I later tried to efile it refused saying it was a duplicate ssn.

Would i rather have my $4,980 refund I'm owed? Pft!!!! YES

I did exactly this, and was hit with a rejected email after I tried to efile. This is the first time this has happened and it accepted my return, but stating IRS will have to see if I qualify. This was over 2 weeks ago. I went ahead and mailed in my return, but do I also mail in the same return to NY state as well. I apologize if this seems like an ignorant question as this is my first time mailing in anything. Also when I mailed to IRS, I did not include copies of my 1099 or W2s. Will this be a problem? Should I mail it all over? <LI-USER uid="2172146"></LI-USER> <LI-USER uid="2159463"></LI-USER> <LI-USER uid="2223638"></LI-USER>

Hello,

What if I filed Form1040 in March by mailing paper to IRS but accidentally used non-filer tool in April, and so far I didn't receive my tax return but I received my stimulus payment (I'm qualified for the stimulus payment, but still made the mistake using non-filer). Any actions I should do in this situation? Thank you ahead.

Same here. I filled non filer form thinking that it was for people who didn't filed tax in 2018 as I was in need of stimulus due to job loss. I found that my husband filed jointly in 2018 and I was dependent. Also, came to know that he already filed our tax for this year in March which I thought he will file in the month of May, my bad. Now IRS accepted my non filer form. I need to let them know we already filed for 2019 and need to cancel this?

I was filed as dependent in 2018 by my husband as I was not working. So, I filled the non filer thinking it was for 2018 and return is accepted. How to cancel my non filer return?

Quick question. On April 26th I went onto freetaxusa and filed the form on there for "stimulus only" I got an email saying my return was accepted by the IRS.

Me being entirely too inpatient, I then went onto IRS.gov and filled out the "non filers" form for my stimulus check.

I got an email 24 hrs later informing me that the IRS rejected my non filers form because of duplicate ssn's, I'm assuming that's because I now have filed for the stimulus check through freetaxusa AND on the IRS website.

My question I need answered so badly is, my first form that I filed through freetaxusa is still going to be filed, correct? And my second form I filed on IRS that was rejected due to me already filing, will just be thrown out right?

Or does this mean both times I filed are BOTH thrown out now?

<LI-USER uid="2217982"></LI-USER> I mailed my paper tax return in March and submitted non-filer form in April and several days ago I got the stimulus check. I'm sure my first tax return hasn't been processed due to COVID-19 (IRS stopped processing paper returns). According to your replies above, my paper return (the correct one) is going to be rejected? Then should I amend my tax return? I asked several CPA's opinions, they told me for now it's no need to amend just wait for how IRS would deal with this.

I accidentally filed non filers thinking it was for the stimulus check. I have been getting mixed information as to how to fix this problem. Do I mail In my taxes and add a cover letter to it explaining error or do I amend my taxes. But how do you amend something that was rejected, therefore not field. The only one filed is the nonfilers one that I did in error but how do you amend that one? Need help

Its not going to matter yoy didnt didnt mess up anything for them your not going to get the 1200 stimulus check anyway because your social security number was claimed on someone elses tax return as a dependent so therefore you are inneligable for the stimulus check and your non filer application is void and will be denied so no worrys dont det them make you feel bad but the person that claimed you got extra money on thier tax refund for claiming you and also gets the extra 500 on thier stimulus so if anything you should be the one mad that they messed it up for you and they should be giving you money

Hi Spata1357, thank u for ur response. But, we already filed 2019 tax return and it is already in process before I fill out the non filer form. This year tax filed as married filing jointly. Also, if IRS were suppose to void then I should have got the rejection email saying that my ssn was already used but instead I received "IRS accepted my return". So, this was the confusion as I thought I messed up our return.

Hey! They same exact thing happened to me. I filled the Non-filers thinking I needed to it in order to get the stimulus check, and now I can't file my taxes. Anyways, what did you choose to do? Did you just mail the 1040? How did you make the notation for 1040X? Where did you get the IRS address? Did you consult with someone else about this? I would appreciate your response! Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have accidentally filed the non-fillers form and now I have filled a new 1040 filer form from turbo tax. Also, I am attaching a 1040X form for amendment. But, I am confused about how to file a 1040X form. I have already filled out the basic details and part III that is the explanation, how to complete the rest of the details.

On another hand, does writing a cover letter instead of a 1040X form is acceptable by IRS and a good option.

Thanks

As of right now, I have not found a for sure answer. Ive been told that if you filed the nonfiler form then you wouldn't be able to file taxes normally for 2019. That I have to print out and mail in an amended tax return. However the IRS website says it's still not processing paper returns at this time so I haven't done anything with that.

I still have not received the stimulus check either, so I do think I have slowed down the process even tho my nonfilers form wasn't accepted. I left it alone after finding out that I didn't need to file it being on SSI.

Hi, this was my previous question :I filled non filer form thinking that it was for people who didn't filed tax in 2018 as I was in need of stimulus due to job loss. I found that my husband filed jointly in 2018 and I was dependent. Also, came to know that he already filed our tax for this year in March which I thought he will file in the month of May, my bad. Now IRS accepted my non filer form. I need to let them know we already filed for 2019 and need to cancel this?

After I posted this, many told me that my non filer form must be deleted by IRS. But today, I found out that they are depositing my stimulus amount on 20th May using my non filer form. Please let me if there will be any problem in my 2019 tax return which is already in processed..

<LI-USER uid="2242375"></LI-USER> I have similar situation as you do. But my mailed tax return hasn't been processed yet (at least haven't heard back from it). I got the stimulus check deposited two weeks ago, too. I think for now the best choice is just wait for IRS's feedback. I'll wait for their decision on my real tax return and then take actions as needed, as suggested by multiple CPAs.

Priya, you dont mention how your husband files, be it efile or paper. If hes already efiled or had his paper return processed then you're both golden for now. It may become an issue later on if ur husband claimed you as a dependent for 2019 and you successfully filed for and are receiving a stimulus check, but it will probably be ages from now after things have returned to normal, if ever.

Or, they may never catch it. It's a simple mistake LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE MADE without malice or ill intent. It wont be viewed as "trying to get over" or anything like that.

My suggestion is ENJOY THAT $1,200 GAAAAAL! lol

But I'm no expert.
Thank you for you response. One other question. I just checked the IRS website to see where to send my amended return and there are two different addresses for 1040 and 1040x. Since I am amending my non-filers return with my 1040 and a cover letter should I send this to the address for the 1040? Or since I'm sending the 1040 in as an amended return and will be writing "1040x amended return" on top of the paper 1040 per your reply should I send this to the address for 1040x? Sorry, this is so confusing!

Thanks so much.

Aaron

Question.. I filled out a non-filer form for my husband because he has not worked any in 2018 or 2019 due to an accident so no income at all. I accidentally clicked he CAN be claimed as a dependent and I have no clue why I did that. I assume I rushed though it. How can I get that changed on his 1040X forms so he can receive his $1200. Is there ANY way to get it changed? It would really help with me, out of work and still haven't received any unemployment ugh just a nightmare.

Thanks,

Michelle

6/23/2020

I sent my file at the end of May by mail, but I accidentally filled out the non-filers two weeks ago, and now I already got the 1200 dollar. I tried to e-file my tax-return file but it was rejected. Should I send a 1040X form? I don't have the record of the original 1040 form because I think the system automatically generated for me, and I accidentally clicked start over in the non-filer system. What should I do?

Hi,

Isn't there anyway to contact IRS and ask them to withdraw/cancel the false non-filer return?

This is the first year I wanted to e-file my tax return on TurboTax but it didn't go through because of multiple ssns error at the end... so I figured I made the same mistake! :(

If there is any other way to withdraw or cancel the non-filer please let me know. Right now the IRS status says: non-filer accepted by IRS but I haven't received anything from IRS (no refund, no stimulus check since May!)

I'm worried that I won't get my refund OR the check because of this.

I would appreciate your help

Thank you!

Mahshid
