And IP pin, or identity protection pin, is issued to taxpayers who were victims of identity theft. The IRS is also gradually making IP pins available to all taxpayers who want them. It applies to both paper and electronic tax returns. If you are assigned and I P pin, it will be mailed to you by the IRS in December prior to each tax season, the pin changes every year. If you file electronically, you must include both the regular 5 digit e-file pin and your 6 digit identity pin. If you file by mail, you write the 6 digit identity pin in a box next to your signature space. If you file by mail without including the identity pin, processing of your return will be delayed while the IRS performs additional verification on your identity.

If you have your IP pin, there is a section to enter it under the page for other tax situations.

if you know that you were assigned an identity protection pin and lost it, you can retrieve a new one from the IRS website. If you are not aware that you were ever assigned an identity protection pin, then your only option right now is to file by mail and see what the IRS does. IRS offices and phone numbers are closed, so you will not be able to resolve this issue for now.

No. No one can get your IP Pin but you and the ONLY place you can get it is the IRS.

Most taxpayers don't need an IP PIN — the IRS only issues them in select cases.

If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:

Retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site; or

Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days) - this is an automated system and will work if your address is current

We're unable to issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

Related Information:

The IRS is committed to helping you get your Economic Impact Payment as soon as possible. The payments also referred to by some as stimulus payments, are automatic for most taxpayers. No further action is needed by taxpayers who filed tax returns in 2018 and 2019 and most seniors and retirees.
