If you have TT Desktop Premier (the download/CD version) then you do not have a separate Cryptocurrency section and the software will not accept a CSV upload.

You will need to enter your Crypto transactions in the Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other section of the Investment section. You can enter the data as individual transactions or you can total your Long Term and Short Term transactions and enter just the two.

Hi - I originally downloaded Turbo Tax Deluxe to do my taxes, but I saw it didn't have an option for me to upload a csv for crypto. A quick Google search showed I needed Premier, so I paid $30 to upgrade from Deluxe to Premier, and I still do not see where I can upload this CSV. Any help is appreciated 🙂

I got the instructions off the Robinhood website.

How do I enter my crypto tax documents into TurboTax?

After logging into TurboTax, navigate to the Wages & Income section.

On the screen where you enter income, find the Cryptocurrency Start button in TurboTax. Cryptocurrency may be under the Investment Income subsection.

Click: Start

In the “Let's get your cryptocurrency info” screen, choose the icon that says Robinhood.

Click: Continue

Drag and drop that CSV file into the next screen (or browse your computer for it and upload it). If you received a Robinhood Crypto 1099, Robinhood also provided a CSV file with your cryptocurrency transactions.

Double check that all of your transactions imported correctly, including the proceeds and cost basis.

Continue through the rest of the process to finish submitting your cryptocurrency income.

You can directly import up to 250 transactions this way.

Related information: How do I get a CSV file from Coinbase?

The Turbotax Desktop versions do not have a cryptocurrency section and you cannot upload a CSV file to it.

You have two options. You can have the CSV file aggregated to two lines, Long Term and Short Term and enter that manually into the Stocks Mutual Funds Bonds and Other section.

You can create a new account on TurboTax online using your 2018 .tax file. Upload the CSV, then use the Save a copy of my return to computer function. Confirm that your CSV has transferred to Form 8949 and Schedule D. You will see nothing in the step by step, you can only see it in forms mode. Of course, any work you have done to date will have to be redone on the new return.

To save a copy of Turbotax Online to computer:

While signed in and working in TurboTax

Click on Tax Tools, then Tools in the left-hand menu

Click on Save a copy of your 2019 return to your computer

TT asks me now to mail form 8453 in which it checked box for form 8949. However, I couldn't find form 8949 prepared by TT in the forms view. Are we to manually fill this form and send it to IRS along with form 8453?

I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

@userIN There are several ways to bring crypto into TurboTax CD\Desktop:

The CD\Download version of TurboTax does not directly support cryptocurrency sales. There are several ways to enter cryptocurrency.

Manual Entries. You can type in the transactions yourself the screens which are set up for stock transactions.

Summaries. You can enter summaries and send copies of your exchange reports to the IRS.

Import TXF file. You can import your transactions if they are in a TXF file format.

Choose File in the upper-left corner of CD\Download

Select Import > From Accounting Software (Windows) or Import > From TXF Files (Mac)

Browse Files and Import Now

Our Community Tax Experts have come up with two workarounds.

Workaround 1 from awesome Tax Expert @KathrynG3:

Click on Forms in the upper right to switch to Forms mode.

Click Open Form in the left column.

You’ll see a pop up titled Search or Browse the list of available forms.

Type cryptocurrency.

Select Cryptocurrency Wks and click Open Form.

Enter your transactions in “Part II: Manually Entered Cryptocurrency Transaction Information.”

Workaround 2 from awesome Tax Expert @DawnC:

Start a free tax return in TurboTax Premier Online. It’s free because you will not finish and pay online. You’ll just use this to prepare your crypto.

Enter (import) your crypto currency information in the Crypto section.

Save the tax data file to your computer. See: How do I switch from TurboTax Online to the TurboTax software?

Open the tax file in TurboTax CD\download and complete your return

@ErnieS0 Option 2 is a great idea except I am not sure how viable that is for an existing TurboTax user. If I want to import my return from 2019 AND have Crypto to enter how would I go about importing two files? Also, why can't Intuit just let us CD/Download users import Crypto? Is this the beginning of the end for doing it on our local machines and we are slowly being forced to do our returns online? Shameless cash grab from Intuit as they will be able to force us to pay for each return we need to do through the website whereas right now I can do returns for my family with a single purchase of the CD??

If TurboTax starts making me use the online version and it costs me a bunch more then I no longer see the need to use their software and can start looking elsewhere. Working in IT I know that there is nothing preventing Intuit from importing Crypto into the CD/Download version other than a) being lazy and not wanting to program it in or b) trying to make the online service more enticing. I hope this choice brings you more customers than it loses you in the long run.

Excellent points @redkian. I was not suggesting a particular solution. Just showing some of the options we've come up here at Community for CD\Desktop users.

Option 2 would be messy in your case since you would have to import your 2019 CD\Desktop to on TurboTax Online, enter crypto and then download the .tax (data file). It would not be worth it.
